You can’t have a pain-free life. It can’t all be roses and unicorns. And ultimately that’s the hard question that matters. Pleasure is an easy question. And pretty much all of us have similar answers. The more interesting question is the pain. What is the pain that you want to sustain?
Read (skimmed through) an article that Louisa shared on Facebook about how it’s pretty useless to ask yourself ‘what do I want?’ Instead, it’s better to ask yourself – as sadistic as it may sound – ‘what pain do I want?’ ‘What am I willing to suffer for?’
Even though I merely skimmed through the article, I felt that it really resonated with me. It was like a subtle reality check that reminds people that the road to ‘success’ – however you define it – is never easy, and is never a straight road. There are bound to be failures, obstacles and embarrassing/awkward moments along the way. But that’s fine, because that’s part of life! And what’s important is knowing how to get over them and attain your goal.
And if you are willing to go through all the unpleasant moments in your journey to get what you want, then that might just show that you ‘want it enough’. After all, paraphrasing from the article, everyone wants something. How do you know when you want it ‘enough’? I suppose it’s ‘enough’ when you realise how the process of getting it is like, and when you realise that you are prepared to put in whatever it takes to overcome the said obstacles.
